I think that the colonists moved their colony somewhere else that had more and better resources. I think that they took down their buildings or Native Americans did.

I just think that they simply left. They needed more food and couldn't just stay on an island with no recorces. The people had to leave and John white was too late.

I believe that the colony lost hope for john white to return, and they were running out of supplies.(John whites mission was to gather supplies, they must have been running short!) So they were forced to pick up and travel someplace else. The buildings could have been salvaged for remaining scraps, leaving the buildings almost torn down.

I agree that the journey was sabotaged from the start. Throughout history, many conspiraces have existed, and the factual evidence provided in "Rethinking Roanoke" makes it seem very possible that this was indeed the case in this specific situation.

I think that the colonists just moved to a different place. Either they moved because they wanted to find more resources, or because they were forced to. Either way, they just gathered everything they had and left leaving no evidence that they were there.

I think that the colony disappeared because they were in need of supplies, such as clothing, water, food, etc. John White was supposed to bring these types of supplies back, but he was too late. So I think they Roanoke people moved to another place to survive or they just went to other Native American people's tribes and lived that way. Somehow they had to survive.

I think that they were in trouble some way and moved to croatoan island, i know that there was no cross above anything signaling they were in trouble, but maybe they forgot to do that,or they were just lacking the supplies that White was supposed to bring back but never had the chance so just went to a different place for a better living that what they had at the time

I think that the colonists did not have nearly the right amount of food and resources that they needed so they just simply moves to a new place. Because we learned that there house or buildings were able to be taken down very easily they probably just took them down and left. I agree that John White was just too late.

I think that the lost colonist befriended the natives and also kinda got together with the natives ( if you know what I mean) and thats why some of the natives they saw had blonde hair and blue eyes.

I think that most of them were killed by the locals and the rest of them joined the friendly locals. there were no traces of them because the natives used all of their stuff.

I think that they had to leave because there wasn't enough food and supplies for them. Since John White was supposed to return in a few months, so they probably thought something happened to him. Then they decided to move to a place where they could get a lot of food..

I think that the lost colony of roanoke, its people lost trust in John White eveer returning with the needed resources, so i think they befriended some of the neighboring indian tribes and joined them so they wouldnt starve to death.

I do believe that the colonists moved there establishment to a different island perhaps. I also believe that the took the indians with them and made a new race. That explains the different colored eyes, and other features persay.

I think that the colonists were killed by the natives but it is also possible that the colonists were killed by harmful diseases.

I think the colonists gave up on Roanoke Island after the unexpected prolonging of the absence of John White. With the lack of food and supplies, lack of survival tecniques, and unfamilliar climate, the colonists had to join up with someone else, or die. I believe the colonists mixed in with other Native American tribes.

Kiran said...

I think that they all died or where killed. They could have died of disease, or maybe they were killed by the native americans. They were planning to go to the Croatoan island because they found out that an attack was going to happen, but before they could leave they were all killed. Then the native americans took down their buildings and cleaned up because it was their land and didn't want english stuff laying around.

The colonists obviously left, or were forced to move somewhere else. An attack by natives would make sense, even natives on the island they didn't know about. The clues could have been rushed, given the no cross over Croatan and the CRO on the tree, possibly rushed and there wasn't time for crosses or to finish Croatan on the tree. So i guess that i think natives attacked, and possibly took the colonists for slaves, or just killed them all, then took their houses for houses of their own. there possibly could have been other clues as well, but natives cleaned them up, accidentally leaving the only two behind.

I think when John White left to get supplies, the colonists expected only a couple of months. Instead, it took three years so lost hope in him and to move to another place. To the buildings I think that either the native americans took them down or since the colonists thought they were betrayed, the colonists took them down so John White could suffer when he came back.

I think they were attacked by the spanish after the conspiritors agianst raliegh tipped off the spanish. the spanish probly just looted it and destroyed any trace of them. Maybe some got away and mingled with the natives idk.

The theory I have as to what happened to the colonists is that a few of them did get killed by the Native Americans; But for the rest of the lost colony, I believe they just left looking for food and supplies. The colonists probably joined a friendly Native American tribe or scattered themselves between different tribes. I don't believe they were all killed because nothing was left and there were no distress clues. The Lumbee very well could be descendents of the colonists, because they probably just joined a tribe!

Oh also i think that the clews were made by the spanish to turn the people/ tribes agianst each other.

I think the colonists ran out of supplies and took down their settlement and moved to Croatoan island. There most of them proabaly starved and the rest moved in with friendly native americans.

Jerry H said...

I think that the colonists wemt to Croatoan Island in search of food, but were killed there. John White was supposed to be bringing supplies soon. So, they probably decided that there was no need to work for supplies if the supplies were going to be brought to them (instead they might have been searching for gold). The supplies never came, so they were low on food. They went to Croatoan Island to get some food. The colonists gave up on their settlement and decided to stay on Croatoan Island, but they were killed by the angered natives.

I think that the colonists either moved their colony somewhere else in search of food and water because as you said in class today, Roanoke Island was a poor place to live because it was hard to find food and water. Or they went off in search of food and water but they angered the Native Americans in that area and were killed by them. They thought they would be back and that is why there was no cross on the tree.

I think that the colonists moved to crotaon island in search for suppies but were killed by the natives that were there. They took their houses down to bring with them to the island.

I think that the colonists left the island to find a better place with all of the resources they were missing (like everything..) John White took too long for them to stay alive with the little resources they had. I believe that they packed everything they had (buildings.. ect. not that much) to start them off in this new place.

I think the colonists left Roanoke Island and traveled to the mainland.I think they mingled with native americans and eventually disappeared.

I think that the colonist moved to somewhere that had more resources. They could not wait any longer for John White, so they moved somewhere which had the supplies that they needed to survive.

I think the colonists moved. They eventually mingled with the Croatoan tribe. Why would they write croatoan on a tree otherwise?
Before I think the colonists were looking for supplies and came across the Croatoan tribe. Then they came back to the colony, packed up, and left.

I think that the colonists befriended the indians because they had ran out of food. They needed recources, the natives had them, bada boom badda bing. Walsingham and fernandez hoped that they would just starve

I think that the people moved out because they needed a new leader and a better life. The two leaders who was in charge did not have good leadership.

I think that the colonists moved to a different area because they did not have enough resources, and john white did not come back soon enough, because that was what he went out looking for in the first place. But he did not make it back in time, so they left without him and took of to find new land to survive on.

Olivia W said...

I think the colonists just moved to a different place to find a climate that they could deal with, and people that spoke their language. There was nothing on the island, because they took it with them. Also, they got tired of waiting for John White, and they could've thought that he had died. Plain and simple.

I think the colonist moved after Jhon White didnt come back and gave up on him so they moved somewhere else

I think that the lost colonists left to go find more supplies and food because they had run out. They also probably thought that John White would never be back with the supplies because he had been gone a lot longer than expected.

I think that the colony just gave up on John and so they had no food or anything so that they just had to make friends with the natives so they could get food.

I believe that the colonists just moved away because of the harsh climate and shortage of resources. They could have used the houses to move some place else or just moved them.

I think the colonists were running out of recorces and were thinking about leaving, but had faith that John White would return. But then they got attacked by a group of natives. They managed to fight them off but were in so much pressure to leave they left in such a hurry that they didn't leave any message for him. So they moved somewhere else

I think that when white did not return in a timely fashion the colony gave up on him and moved farther into land to look for more supplies. When they did not find what they where looking for the eventually starved or messed with the wrong indians.

Dominique T. said...

I think that the colonists faced such hard conditions that they had to leave, but not in a hurry since they left no signs that they were in danger. Since they group was never seen together ever again, they might have disagreed somewhere along the way and went in different ways, maybe some went to Native Americans, others tried to start a new colony, or go by water,Ect...
Another possibility of what they did was that a huge disease spread, and the few survivors left decided to burn everything so the disease could not spread anymore. Then they got rid of the ashes and moved along, without leaving any danger signals because they left in such a hurry.

Seffie said...

I think that some of the colonists ended up living with some of the friendlier Native Americans, and that others fell into the hands of the unfriendly Native Americans. The ones that fell into teh unfreindly probably got killed, and the ones in the friendly could be descendants of the Lumbee.

I think that The colonists ran out of supplies and split up. I think that they then the people joined in with some of the native tribes. (They probably took their individual houses with them) To explain why they wrote Croatoan on a palisade, I think that one of them might have had an idea where they might go so they left a mark so someone could come and find/ rescue them.

I think that the colonist actually moved deeper into the Americas. I think this because, if the were killed then there would have been dead bodys lying on the ground. After they moved deeper in, I think that they were killed by either Native Americans or the starved to death

I believe that the colonists moved their colony somewhere else. They probably moved because of the drought and other problems such as food shortages. Later one, they most likely mixed with Native Americans, and that's where you get the stories about blond haired and blue eyed natives.

What I think happened to the Lost Colonist of Roanoke is that Spain had come to the island of Roanoke and some of the villagers had seen them so they had to run away from their town. Carved crosses and Croatoan in different spot to tell White where they were when he came back. When Spain found their village they destroyed it so there would be

The colonists were running short on provisions. John White was returning to England to retrieve them, but because of the war between Spain and England, he was forced to stay in England for three years. The colonists had been getting food from the native tribes during the warmer seasons, but the couldn't spare any food during the winter. They were forced to abandon Roanoke and mingle in with the local tribes.

i think they moved inland in search of supplies and ran into a native war. they went looked for help from the croatoans and got it. that is the reason for the mysterious carvings on the tree and the doorpost.
